both sharing the rights to the original franchise
A vibrant journey through the life of Pharrell Williams, told through the lens of LEGO animation. Animal Logic, who animated the previous four Lego films, did not return to animate the film, as it would be considered a betrayal of Warner Bros., despite Lego and Warner Bros. Instead, the animation was done at Pure Imagination Studios in Los Angeles and Zebu Animation Studios in India. Both Pure Imagination and Zebu have previously recreated the style of the original film franchise through theme park attractions, PSAs, and the Simpsons (1989) episode “Brick Like Me (2014)”. The opening Universal Pictures, Focus Features, Tremolo Productions, and Lego Group studio logos are made of Lego bricks. Featured in Graham Norton Starring: Billy Crystal/Emily Mortimer/Hugh Bonneville/Pharrell Williams/Michael Kiwanuka (2024).
Nothing really drew me to this movie other than the LEGOs
It’s Happening Written by Pharrell Williams and Shelly BergPerformed by Pharrell Williams Courtesy of Columbia Records/Sony Music Entertainment. 6.6/10 (Recommended, but not in theaters) This is mostly family friendly because it’s a LEGO-esque movie, but it’s not really aimed at families at all. I like Pharrell Williams’ music, but he’s not someone I’m dying to hear or see. I like the style he decided to go with in telling his life story. As a LEGO movie you can create whatever you want with whatever your imagination can come up with, but despite the flashy set pieces and catchy tunes that some of us would recognize, it still falls flat. I don’t think this biopic is a “woah that’s me” type of movie; despite the rags to riches angle, but the way things are told you don’t really get a sense of the struggles Pharrell had to go through to make it big.
So I learned something
The movie isn’t a complete waste of time. I never realized how big an impact Pharrell had on music. Creating music for artists like Snoop Dogg, Jay Z, Gwen Stefani, and Justin Timberlake, to name a few. I would definitely watch this movie once, but I wouldn’t see it in theaters if I could go back. Overall, it’s a shallow 90 minute story that only gives a fraction of the insight into the road Pharrell will take. It’s great.
That’s it for now
It definitely has a “go after what you want” subplot, but you also have to work hard. It’s a flashy movie that uses LEGO, but it never really strikes an emotional chord. I wouldn’t recommend seeing it in theaters or with family (unless you’re into the music genre). There’s only one curse word in the movie, but most of it is bleeped out, except maybe three times. Ultimately though, there’s no denying Pharrell’s impact. He’s got his hands on some of the greatest songs I’ve ever heard, but I never would have considered it.
Enjoy the show and enjoy!
